maximum field height in list page

hi,
I have an "alerts" table with a text field. sometimes the warning is very long and I would like to set the maximum height of the txt field in the list page. it's possible?
Once the maximum height has been set, I would like to have a scrollbar at the side to continue reading the message.
it can be done?
