HTML Characters in LONGTEXT

Hello, I'm trying to input HTML characters into a textfield, however it looks like it's creating odd characters for my open/close brackets. Can you tell me how to fix this if I'm not using the DHTML editor?

Please specify what you have inputted to the text field and what are the odd characters for your open/close brackets .

See Tools -> Advanced Settings -> Remove XSS in the help file.
